At the time these mines were surveyed, 33,619 mines in The United States were observed to have ore mineralization in an outcrop, shallow pit, or isolated drill hole—known as an occurance mine.1 The United States has 25,521 prospect mines.2 73,499 mines were in production at the time the data was entered into USGS records. California, Nevada, and Colorado are the states with the most mines.
